Glimpses of Mt. Alvernia High School Track & Field Team (2001-2002)

TRACK & FIELD TEAM, 2001-2002 with Mrs. Murray and Coach Henry

Under the watchful eye of Coach Andrew Henry, the 25 students who had survived rigorous training over a four-month period turned up at Cornwall College for Western Championships 2002. St. Elizabeth Technical were the usual favourites, expecting competition from only Holmwood Technical, and Herbert Morrison Technical were the anticipated champion of the West.

Sr. Angella trotted over to Cornwall College to view the last of the events, the relays, and overheard a member of a group of Herbert Morrison students comment, "Den a di Mt. Alvernia girl dem a gwaan so?" It was said with some surprise, but with definite annoyance, as the Mt. Alvernia student breezed by her compatriot in the Class 3 – 4x100 relay. Mt. Alvernia High in fact went on to place third in the meet, dethroning Herbert Morrison as Champion of the West.

The Track & Field team placed 27th in Girls Champs. Apart from displaying talent on the track, girls performed in Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Discus.

The girls returned feeling disappointed not to have captured a medal, but they performed creditably, making it to a number of finals, and eventually placing 27th of 65 schools. The performance by this group of girls is the best in recent memory and most of them will still be in school for the year 2002-2003.

Of course, equipment, gear, transportation, accommodation, nutrition, coaching all combine to translate into thousands of dollars. If you would like to help with the Track Team, please contact us!
