Remember when your Principal looked like this?

In more recent years she dressed like this...

Sr. Joan Clare, Principal 1968-1995

Now she looks like this...

Franciscan Sisters have been ministering at Mt. Alvernia High School since 1925. A lot has changed as far as the Sisters' dress is concerned, but what has been consistent is the commitment and dedication that each has given as she has made her contribution to building this wonderful institution. Each Franciscan Sister belongs to the Congregation named the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.

The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany have been ministering in Jamaica for 143 years. Read a concise account of their history as prepared by the Immaculate Conception Past Students (Toronto Chapter).

MAY PROCESSION - 1966

In its early days as a private school operated by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, Mt. Alvernia High School students participated in many Roman Catholic services, events and rituals. One of these was the May procession, held in honour of the Blessed Mother. This was an annual event, with the procession ending at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, next door the school.

JIPPY JAPPA TIME!

CARDINAL CUSHING AND ARCHBISHOP CARTER VISIT

The school uniform has certainly changed over the years. A feature of the uniform in the sixties was the JIPPY JAPPA hat. With the arrival of the seventies, this evolved into a turban and after a few years the public was allowed to view the uncovered hair of the ladies of Mt. Alvernia High School .

Not many students can attest to having been in the presence of a Cardinal. When he visited Jamaica in the sixties, Cardinal Cushing, accompanied by the now deceased Archbishop Carter are met at the airport by a group of students. The distinctive jippy jaapa hat and the even more distinctive bow were worn by students but a tie now replaces the bow.

The Graduation Ceremony is a highlight of the school calendar each year. In 1966 the first set of graduates of the newly formed Commercial School left the school. The Commercial School is no longer in existence. Students attend the Graduation Ceremony at Mt. Alvernia High if they meet the school's standards as set out in the Criteria for Graduation.

75th Anniversary Celebrations
